PEACE
“Let’s promote friendship and respect between people of different
religious traditions in order to build a world of peace.” Pope Francis
What did Jesus say his gift was to his friends? The instructions given by Jesus at the ‘Last
Supper’, which we read about in this Sunday’s Gospel, remind us that the peace Jesus gives
is a special inner peace which comes from receiving the Holy Spirit into our lives. Through the
sacrifice he made on the cross, Jesus won this peace for us. Ask your child what the word
‘peace’ means to them. Ask them when they feel most at peace, or when they feel most
safe and not worried about anything. Do they know someone who is a good peacemaker
– someone who always helps to ease trouble because they bring God’s love with them?
“Dear young people, let us pray for peace in our hearts.” Pope Francis
True peace (the removal of all anxiety, worry and envy) comes only from God. This peace
is not dependent on peaceful conditions: we can experience it even in the midst of trouble
or uncertainty. Peace, like love, is a gift to share. How can we bring peace to others
in this coming week? Perhaps we can: do what our parents and teachers ask us to do;
not tease or make fun of friends, brothers or sisters; remember to smile when we meet
people; try to be peacemakers if our friends are arguing. Why not, as a family, visit
