Before sunrise on Sunday morning, Mary Magdalene went
to Jesus’ tomb. She saw that the stone had been moved
away from the entrance and that the tomb was empty.
Mary ran to Peter and another disciple (John) and said,
“Someone has taken the Lord out of the tomb and we
don’t know where they have put him.” The disciples ran
together to the tomb. But John, running faster than Peter,
arrived first and looked into the tomb but did not go in.
Peter, however, went into the tomb and he saw Jesus’
linen burial cloths lying on the ground. He also saw the
cloth that had been over Jesus’ head; this was rolled up
in a place by itself. Then John also went into the tomb; he
saw and he believed. Until this moment they had failed to
understand that Jesus must rise from the dead.

What did Mary Magdalene see when she went to Jesus’ tomb? This week is Holy Week
and this coming Sunday is Easter Sunday. All over the world, Christians rejoice in the
wonderful truth that Jesus rose from the dead. Jesus’ resurrection offers every one
of us a fresh start and a share in his everlasting life. As a family, take a moment to
look at the picture above. What feelings or thoughts come to you? Invite your child
to tell the Easter story in their own words. You can help them by sharing something
you’ve learned or experienced about Easter through the years.

Easter Sunday is the greatest day in the Church’s calendar. Because of Jesus’
resurrection, we can live with hope, knowing that God’s love is stronger than
anything. Everyone is warmly invited to take part in the Easter celebrations at
church this weekend. As a family, think of simple ways you can make Easter
Sunday special at home too. Is there someone you could brighten Easter for
with a small act of kindness?
Dear Lord Jesus, thank you
for the joy of Easter and for
the new life you bring. Fill our
hearts with your peace and help
us to share your love with
those around us. Amen.
